Flash Websites and SEO
A well done Flash website can add spark and pizzazz to an otherwise boring web page. However, it is very important to use Flash sparingly. While all-Flash websites can be beautiful, from a Search Engine Optimization standpoint, it can make it very difficult to achieve high rankings.
The reason for this problem is that most web crawlers can’t see the text in the website even though it is visible to the viewer. It only sees the code and not the text since the text is embedded in the Flash. Since relevant content is such as valuable facet of SEO, not being able to acknowledge it is a huge problem.
However, there are ways in which an all Flash website can be optimized. One way is through the creation of a sitemap. By creating a sitemap for the website, it will house the HTML text. This will allow the search engines to crawl the site and actually find the text.
Another way is to have a Flash homepage and then have the rest of the website set up in an HTML format. It is also not uncommon to have two websites, a Flash site and then a HTML website. There are many instances in which a website will have the option of viewing it in either Flash or HTML.
You can also create HTML landing pages which can be designed to look very much like the Flash website. This is also another way in which to improve search engine optimization.
Finally, you can create multiple flash files and still have the HTML pages around the different Flash files.
From an aesthetic standpoint, Flash websites can be very beautiful and powerful. However, to practice proper SEO techniques, they should be avoided. However, if you must have an all Flash website, make sure you still build in the ability for the web crawlers to be able to see the text on the site. It doesn’t matter how nice the website is, if no one can find it, they won’t see it.
