Elements of Website Design

You have decided to build or have built a website for your business.  You have taken the first step on the path down the information superhighway.  Like with any other project, having a good plan is a key to success.  In the world of website design, this is especially true. 

The first aspect is the look and feel of the website.  It is important to be aware that the main purpose of the website is to draw customers in and keep them there.  You need to make sure the website has a good color pallet.  Avoid using backgrounds and font colors that don’t match.  We have all been on websites where reading the text was next to impossible because they chose a background that didn’t work well with the font color.  It is also important to make the correct choice in font style.  If you choose a font that looks really nice but is hard to read, it defeats the purpose of having the information in the first place.  You want your customers to be able to understand what you provide, not give them a headache.

It is also important to have good navigation on your website.  Make the navigation as easy as possible.  You want the website to take the customer where they want to go with minimal effort.  Difficult and confusing navigation is the kiss of death for a website.  If your customers can’t find what they are looking for, they will go to a competitor site where they can.

You also need to make sure that the design is clean.  Stay away from excessive flash or video features.  If there are too many things going on at one time it looks like a pinball machine.  While flash and video used in moderation are great tools for web development, excessive use becomes a distraction.  A good clean design will always win out over a jumbled mess.

Finally, the most important thing when creating a quality website is to have lots of good content.  Content is the most important aspect of a website.  It doesn’t matter if the site is beautiful in design.  If the content is lacking, it will be detrimental, especially from a search engine optimization standpoint.  You want your website to be an information resource for your customers.  If you are an expert in your field, customers will come to you because they know you will be able to answer their questions and provide them with what they need.

Establishing a website presence is one of the smartest moves a business can make from a marketing standpoint.  If you follow the basic concepts of good design, you will have a website that you will be proud to have people see, and will generate revenue for your business.
